Orinda’s roots trace back to the late 19th century, shaped by Spanish influence and a quiet, rural charm that set it apart from the bustling Bay Area. Established in the 1920s and incorporated as a city in 1985, Orinda grew steadily thanks to improved regional access and post-war development. Through that growth it remained committed to preserving its peaceful character.
Over the years, Orinda became known for its local arts and entertainment, desirable schools and a family-friendly lifestyle. Today, it continues to attract residents seeking a balance of natural beauty and community spirit. Guided by a tradition of fiscal responsibility and public service, Orinda’s leaders work to promote a safe, healthy and vibrant community where people of all ages and stages can happily settle, echoing the spirit of Orinda’s historical roots.
Downtown Orinda offers an impressive array of dining and nightlife experiences, blending the charm of nostalgic restaurants and boutique eateries with the excitement of nationally recognized favorites. Whether you’re a local looking for your next go-to spot or a visitor exploring the town for the first time, you’ll enjoy flavorful choices and places to unwind.
The area is known for its abundant al fresco dining within Theatre Square, with patios and outdoor seating that make the most of Orinda’s pleasant climate. From early morning coffee to late-night cocktails, Downtown Orinda serves up something for every craving, every mood and every time of day.

Strategic Initiatives
ConnectOrinda
Connect Orinda proposes to better unify the two halves of Orinda’s downtown — the Village and Theatre Districts — by making pedestrian and bicycle access safer and more appealing, restoring and activating San Pablo Creek as a natural and civic amenity, preserving the town’s historic “village‐scale” character, and generating beautification and grant‑eligible infrastructure projects through extensive community outreach.
